How Affirmations Changed My Life
Before we dive into all your questions about affirmations, I want to share how I discovered affirmations and how affirmations changed my life. I’ve struggled on and off with depression since I was a young teenager. In my mid-twenties, I decided enough was enough. I felt terrible about my body and myself in general despite having a dream job and stable relationship. Life was more beautiful than this, and I wanted to feel it. Something needed to change. It was clear that many of the problems lay in my thought patterns and had on-and-off since I was a teenager. I started telling myself the opposite of the negative stories that kept playing in my head.
Affirmations were the first tool I used in my quest to become a happier person. I remember the first time I used them. They came to me very naturally when I was in this very low place in life. I created my affirmations by telling myself the opposite of the basic negative stories running through my head. For example, at the time, one was that I wasn’t loved. Looking at the logical evidence, this simply wasn’t true. My parents loved me dearly, my friends, my partner, my cat. I don’t know where this one came from exactly, but I think it related to being lonely after just starting a new job in a town away from my boyfriend. Needless to say, it was an illogical story clouding my mind, so I started telling myself, “I am loved.”
I was pleased to find that the self-love affirmations I was repeating to myself were working with perseverance. Through affirmations, I managed to open space to explore new self-development tools, ultimately discovering my passion for Yoga. To this day, affirmations are an integral tool in my daily self-care regime. I write them in my journal alongside my daily gratitude, and I harness them when working on something new. Affirmations are simple, free, and highly powerful. Learning how to create and use affirmations will help you re-program your brain to experience more joy in your life—the joys of science!
